Second Grade
Literacy
“Superkids” is the Language Arts program used in the lower elementary grades at St. John's. This program implements reading, writing, phonics, and spelling all in one. Students are also encouraged to read "just right books" with the help of the Accelerated Reading program. Second grade writing projects include: different styles of poems, an autobiography, book reviews, personal stories, and research papers.
Religion
In second grade students will experience First Reconciliation and First Communion. Students receive a book with each sacrament that goes home every week. Parents are encouraged to take time and review the book with their child. They are children of God and being a part of this experience with them is something that both parents and children will remember for a lifetime!
Math
“Progress in Math” is the program used in grades kindergarten through sixth grade at St. John's. Second grade covers many concepts: addition and subtraction (with & without regrouping), money, geometry, time, small fractions, and a touch of multiplication.
Individual and small group attention is given to students in math as the students rotate between math activities. During this time, the students reinforce and build their number sense through activities in their math boxes, play math games with a partner to practice their math facts, and meet with the teacher in small groups or independently to get the extra attention they may need.
Science & Social Studies
Areas of study for Science in second grade throughout the year are: Life Science, Earth Science, Physical Science, and Space & Technology. In Social Studies students learn about: current events, communities, the economy, continents, and government.
